Napa wineries drop port

Three winery members of the Napa Valley Vintners (NVV) have announced that they are giving up voluntarily the use of port on their fortified dessert wine labels.

The potential that is pent up in the wine industry can be released in the pooling of knowledge and resources between competitors, according to Adrian Bridge of Fladgate Partnership.

La Martiniquaise owner of the Gran Cruz, the world's largest producer of port, has announced the opening of a new site with a modern winery and centralised bulk storage.

Diamond Jubliee port

The port house, Symington, is offering a 1952 tawny port to celebrate and commemorate the diamond jubilee of the British queen’s ascent to the throne of the United Kingdom.

Indian malt whisky brand Amrut has launched a whisky matured in port barrels, named Portonova, to global markets.

The CEO of the Fladgate Partnership has called for the quality standard of rosé port to be raised.

Portugal: The Blandy Group has regained control of the Madeira Wine Company (MWC) from Symington Family Estates. Symington will still retain a minority share in the business, but intends to concentrate on its Cockburn port brand, which it purchased last year.

Italy/Australia: The Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore Consorzio has welcomed a ban on Australian producers using the term prosecco, under new EU laws. The Consorzio has pledged to continue fighting to get the ban implemented in other countries that continue to make prosecco, like Brazil.

Portugal: Boutique port producer Andresen has released a 100 year old port.

It’s ‘up periscope’ for Irish distilleries

I know how wierd this might seem but I often think that the opening of a new distillery is like the launch of a new submarine. It is unveiled in all its pristine glory in a blaze of publicity and fanfare.
