Sales of beers, wines and spirits have finally started to decline in the UK off-trade after bars were permitted to open their doors once again.

UK port sales soar in 2020

Port sales in the UK saw impressive category growth throughout 2020, with the largest volume of off-trade sales since 2015.

Sales of spirits, wine and beer continue to soar in the US off-trade as shoppers shun bars and restaurants in favor of drinking at home.

The latest Nielsen sales figures show that the combined growth of Chile (+4.1%) and Argentina (+11.2%) have seen South America overtake Italy in value sales of still wine.

The Can Makers, the industry trade body representing the UK drinks can manufacturers have announced a record 4.835 billion can deliveries were made in the first half of 2014.

Total alcohol sales continue to fall according to the latest Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA) market report.

Accolade calls for unity

Accolade Wines has called for unity across the drinks trade in a bid to encourage the UK government to re-think the alcohol duty escalator. The company's WineNation 2012 report claimed tax is having “a crippling effect” across the industry.

The Wine and Spirit Trade Association says gin and sparkling wine sales increased in the UK during the run up to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

David Cox, director – Europe for New Zealand Winegrowers has left the organisation to pursue other interests and projects.

Edwin H Nielsen (pictured), the great-grandson of Bacardi founder Don Facundo Bacardí Massó has died in Spain at the age of 93.
