Ginebra San Miguel storms gin category

19 June, 2015

Philippine gin Ginebra San Miguel has strengthened its position as the world’s best-selling gin, adding 10% in sales volume last year, according to The Millionaires' Club 2015.

At 19m 9-litre cases, the San Miguel-owned giant is now more than five times bigger than its nearest competitor in the category, Gordon’s, which slid 3% last year to 3.6m cases.

The Diageo-owned brand is now under threat as the top internationally sold gin, as Bacardi’s Bombay family of sub-brands grew 9% to reach 3m cases.

Seagram’s Gin, owned by Pernod Ricard, finished fourth in the list of gin brands, though dropped 4% to 2.7m cases, while the French group’s Beefeater completed the top five at 2.6m cases.

Tanqueray was the category’s other big mover, piling on 9% of growth to reach 2.4 cases.

The Millionaires’ Club 2015 report will be published in July as a supplement to Drinks International magazine.
