Situated under the famous food halls just off Hans Street (door 11), the department has been enlarged from approximately 200 sqm/2,500 sq ft to 650 sq m/7,000 sq ft. It boasts 3,000 wines, spirits and a limited selection of beer.
Alistair Viner, Harrod’s wines and spirits purchasing manager, said: “We want to known for the best wines from the best regions at the best prices.”
Viner said the ratio was approximately 70% wine and 30% spirits with more than 300 wines from Bordeaux and about the same from Burgundy and Italy. Large formats, such as magnums and jereboams are specialities of Viner’s . Magnums of Haut Brion, Ornellaia, Solaia and Almaviva were spotted among many. The department boasts 18 champagnes “on promotion”.
The impressive basement room features a private dining room/tasting room, a glass walled, climate controlled, ‘Wine Vault’ for its top wines. Chateau Lafite was spotted at £1,095. In the spirits section, Remy Martin Louis XIII Rare Cask was priced at £11,750.
There is also an Enomatic Elite for dispensing 16 wines by the glass. There is also a Nez du Vin ‘aroma zone’ where customers can test their sense of smell.
