Tanqueray tops the best sellers yet again, but Hendrick’s is making its mark. By Hamish Smith

It's six of the best for Tanqueray in our gin league – no other has been more popular in our polled bars since 2013. More than a quarter of polled bars said Tanqueray was their go-to gin, with half saying it was among their top three. The Diageo-owned brand seems to have cemented its place as the bartender’s no.1, with Hendrick’s this year taking second spot. It’s been a slow burner for the William Grant brand in this list – this is the first time it’s finished above Beefeater, the perennial runner-up. Can we read too much into this? Only perhaps that Hendrick’s is the number one alternative – almost a half of bartenders said it was among their top three best sellers, but of that number, a proportionally low percentage (7%) made it their house pour.

Beefeater, by contrast, was the best seller in a fifth of bars polled, but was only a top-three gin in a third of bars. It’s reasonable to surmise, then, that the number one brand in bars has to be affordable and juniper-led (most likely Tanqueray or Beefeater), while less classical and often more expensive gins have a place on the flanks (Hendrick’s more than any other).

Bombay, owned by Bacardi, fights it out with Diageo and Pernod Ricard for the house pour contract, and if our poll is anything to go by, mostly loses. Only 8% said it was the number one gin, with a little over a quarter saying it’s among their top three sellers.

Monkey 47, with Pernod Ricard holding the reins, has a chance of climbing out of mid-table – it was also the clear winner in the Trending list. Only one old-timer – Plymouth – sits among the cool kids of the gin category: 86 Company’s Fords, Maison Ferrand’s Citadelle, Beam-Suntory’s Sipsmith and the Danish gin, Geranium.

Methodology

The results of this report are the culmination of a questionnaire of 106 bars around the world, each cherry-picked to take part based on their performance in global bar awards. We aim to find out not only which brands sell best but also what’s trending. These two data sets give us an insight into the brands that are doing the most volume and the brands that are hot right now.
