Since the wine world has been going crazy for South Africa lately, Lucy Britner samples wine merchant Enotria's South African offerings.
This is a big wine. According to the label, it's 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 13% Pinotage and 9% Cabernet Franc.
The first thing you can smell when you approach the deep ruby liquid is the Cabernet Sauvignon, characterised by black currant leaf and eucalyptus. Rich, ripe plum and hedgerow fruits follow with a hint of festive spice.
On the palate the wine is extremely fruity with an initial alcohol-warmth balanced out by black fruits and a touch of cinamon and clove. The menthol, eucalyptus note lifts the palate and the rich fruit flavour is under-pinned by greener, vegetal notes. Tannins are present but not aggressive and the acidity is vibrant. This lively acidity and intense fruit character should ensure the wine lasts a few years yet.
For a food match, I'd go for steak and chips. Or since we're talking South Africa, perhaps a springbok steak.
The packaging is fairly simple and although there's nothing particularly outstanding about the bottle, it's quite clean and modern-looking.
