Nichol recreates Tanqueray Old Tom Gin

13 June, 2014

Diageo has recreated Tanqueray Old Tom Gin for the global on-trade and speciality retailers.

The product is inspired by founder Charles Tanqueray’s 1835 recipe and has been brought to market with “bartenders and connoisseurs in mind’.

The launch is limited to 100,000 bottles and follows the release of Malacca last year – another Charles Tanqueray recipe brought to life by current master distiller Tom Nichol.

The Old Tom style is said to bridge the flavour gap between Dutch genevers and the London Dry style. Diageo described Old Tom as “lighter than a genever but more full-bodied and sweeter than a London Dry”.

Master Distiller Tom Nichol said: “It’s an honour to be privy to Charles Tanqueray’s recipe book and to bring back a great gin which reflects the classic Old Tom style but is elevated further by new distilling techniques.”

Barrie Wilson, Tanqueray global brand ambassador, added: “This exceptional liquid will allow bartenders to recreate authentic Old Tom cocktails with a true sense of how they would have tasted historically.

"As part of this launch, we’ve identified ten historical Tanqueray Old Tom cocktails and included their initials along with the bottle number on the front label. Our hope is to inspire bartenders to bring these definitive cocktails back for a new generation.”
