Don Julio has retained its crown as the bestselling tequila brand in the world’s best bars.

There are trends pushing the popularity of 100% agave tequilas in Europe – but at what cost to the supply of agave? And does an agave-rich tequila guarantee quality or are consumers overpaying for marketing?

Diageo has pledged to make capital investment to expand local production facilities across distilling, bottling and water treatment as well as increasing its agave farming capacity in Mexico, following the completion of its acquisition of Tequila Don Julio last week.

That a brand as small as Ocho can be the top selling tequila in any bar, let alone 11 of our 100 surveyed bars, is quite something.

Diageo has opted for total control of its tequila destiny rather than a fight for second place in Irish whiskey, according to Euromonitor International's Jeremy Cunnington.

Bottled cocktails: The dos and don'ts

Pre-made cocktails have always carried a stigma, which I find odd. The romance of watching bartenders make drinks from scratch left pre-batched cocktails feeling cheap to many consumers, but lockdowns have forced this attitude to change.
