Buffalo Trace extends un-aged line

11 August, 2011

Buffalo Trace has launched two un-aged bourbons, White Dog Wheated Mash and White Dog Rye Mash.

The new editions join White Dog Mash #1, Buffalo’s Trace’s first clear whiskey which was launched two years ago.

Bottled at ‘barrel-fill proof’, the whiskies are intended to allow consumers to experience what whiskies taste like before barrel ageing.

The bourbons are priced at $15.99 per 375ml bottle.

Wheated Mash White Dog is distilled from corn, barley and includes the addition of wheat which, according to the Kentucky-based distillery, “offers less bite”.

The whiskey carries an abv of 57% and is the same recipe used to make the distillery’s WL Weller and Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon.

The  62.5% abv Rye Mash White Dog is made from corn, barley, and rye grains - which adds a “spicy and complex” quality.

If aged in barrels, the whisky would become Buffalo Trace’s Sazerac Straight Rye Whiskey.

The clear whiskey range was originally intended to be sold in the Buffalo Trace gift shop as a novelty item, until, claims the brand, “media outlets latched on to it, bartenders demanded it, and liquor stores asked for it”.

Kris Comstock, brand manage of Buffalo Chase, said: “We’ve been genuinely surprised how fast White Dog has grown in popularity.”

“Hopefully bartenders and consumers will come up with some creative cocktails using the Wheat and Rye. If nothing else, you can see how these whiskeys taste before and after barrel aging.”
