Bacardi has regained its status as the world’s best-selling rum, leapfrogging Indian brand McDowell’s No.1 Celebration.

According to DI's Millionaires' Club, the ex-Cuba produced rum saw its volumes drop 1% to 17.2m 9-litre cases in 2016, but its decline wasn’t as steep as the Diageo/United Spirits-owned McDowell’s which fell 8% to 14.9m cases, leaving it in third.

Philippine brand Tanduay gained 1%, taking its 2016 case total to 16.6m and second place for the first time since 2012.

Captain Morgan completes the quartet of brands with more than 10m cases sold last year, finishing on 10.7m cases with growth of 1%.

Havana Club, in fifth, saw healthy 5% growth having experienced relatively flat growth in recent years.

Sailor Jerry made the million-case grade for the first time, taking its place in the Millioniares’ Club with 1m cases sold last year and 4% growth.
