22 May, 2015

Mendoza winery Salentein are in talks with Argentinean authorities to create a new GI for San Pablo in Mendoza.

The high-altitude region of the Uco Valley is currently opperated by Salentein and a couple of other wineries, including Zuccardi.

Winemaker of Salentein Jose Galante - who this year celebrates his 40th harvest - told DI the company’s Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines have been planted in the region for upto 15 years and that the resulting wines are of higher acidity and minerality than those from the surrounding region.

Matias Bauza Moreno, luxury portfolio manager, added: “We know that the wines are different [in San Pablo] but we have to prove it with paper [work].”

Moreno expects the discussions with bodies Instituto National de Viniviticultura and INTER and the local university to conclude in favour of the GI within 2 years.
