Drinks International launches Bar World 100

31 July, 2019

Ryan Chetiyawardana has been ranked as the world's most influential bar industry figure in the new Drinks International magazine Bar World 100.

Launched under the editorship of Hamish Smith, Bar World 100 is the result of a survey of a panel of international bar commentators, celebrating those figures effecting positive change in the bar industry.

Lyaness' Chetiyawardana was joined by Tayer + Elementary's Alex Kratena (2nd) and Monica Berg (5th) in the list, with American writer Dave Wondrich in third and fellow New Yorker, Leyanda owner Ivy Mix in fourth.

The 100 names hailed from 41 locations around the world, with New York and London found to be the hubs of influence in the bar industry.

Elsewhere in the top 10, were Trash Collective's Iain Griffiths, now based in Toronto, BCB education director, Angus Winchester in New York, Carina Soto Velasquez of Quixotic Projects in Paris, Jeffrey Morganthaler of Clyde Common in Portland and Tim Etherington-Judge of Healthy Hospo in the UK.

The list was dominated by bartenders and bar operators - making up 61% of the list - while brand representatives (both producers and ambassadors) were the second largest group with a 12% share. Ten percent were media, with consultants making up 7%, while event organisers and campaigners both took a 5% slice of the vote.

The panel of 100 commentators chosen to vote were mainly media professionals and were drawn from 71 cities around the world, with no more than two voters picked from any one city. Each voter was asked to name whom they consider to be among the top 10 most influential figures, driving positive change in the global bar industry.

Hamish Smith, editor of Bar World 100, said: “Being about people, Bar World 100 is unlike any poll we’ve done before. We’ve put the focus of the voting panel on balance, in terms of geography and diversity, in attempt to view the bar industry through as wide a lens as possible.

"The end result of our poll is a stellar list of 100 names who are pushing this industry forward in new directions, enacting positive change. If you’re not following the careers of these people, you might want to start.”
