Italy: Coffee brand Illy enters wine business

The Italian premium coffee company Illy has gone into the wine business.

The Italian premium coffee company Illy has gone into the wine business. The company has purchased 90 hectares of land near Siena, where Brunello di Montalcino is produced.

Illy paid €16.5 million to the Mastrojanni brothers who began winemaking in 1975.

Twenty-four hectares of the land have been planted with vines including 14.5 hectares of Brunello grapes.

Annual sales total around €1 million from 80,000 bottles which include 50,000 of Brunello.
