Diageo is Britain’s most admired company, according to trade magazine Management Today.

The company pipped retail giants like Marks and Spencer and Tesco to the top spot.

Diageo reached ninth place in the 2007 poll but took the top spot this year. The admirable movers and shakers were nominated by large companies, investors and analysts.

Last year’s list included the likes of Sainsbury’s, M&S and Tesco, but this year only Tesco remained in the top 10.

The bank sector, and retailer Woolworth fell down the list – with Woolies coming in at 238th.  InterContinental hotels, Whitbread, SABMiller and managed pub chain JD Wetherspoon all faired well. Diageo will be crowned number one at this evening’s Management Today awards.
