UK: Gov't to introduce new wine and beer measures
Published:  30 September, 2009

UK: Government plans to allow sample measures of wine and two thirds of a pint of beer have been welcomed by the trade.

The Government announced that it would legislate to deregulate wine measures under 75ml in a move that will allow bars and restaurants the flexibility offer sample measures of wine to their customers.

Previously, wine could only be sold in measures of 125ml, 175ml and multiples thereof.  Following lobbying by the wine trade, the National Measures Office included the proposal in the Consultation on specified quantities - non pre-packages and food information, in October last year.

Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA) chief executive Jeremy Beadles said:
"Deregulating wine measures below 75ml is a welcome move that the WSTA and our members have long been arguing for. This flexibility will give consumers the chance to sample small measures of the huge variety of wines out there, letting them broaden their knowledge and taste everything from the finest and rarest to the most innovative and experimental."

Britain’s brewing and pub companies have also welcomed the Government’s decision to legalise a new two thirds of a pint measure for beer.

Brigid Simmonds, chief executive of the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) said: “We are delighted the Government has legalized the two thirds of a pint, for which the BBPA has been lobbying long and hard for many years.

“Pubs will now enjoy greater flexibility and our customers will now be able to have even greater choice about how to enjoy their beer.  While the pint of beer remains a great British icon, a wider choice is better suited to today’s tastes and lifestyles.  As a lower strength drink with a wide variety of styles, tastes and flavours beer will now also be enjoyed in a richer range of measures and glass styles.”
