Tanqueray Malacca - which draws inspiration from a spiced, gin-based liqueur recipe from the 19th century - was sold for a short period in the US in the early 2000s and, according to Diageo, is back due to demand among bartenders.
The 40% abv gin, which will be available in the US, Spain, Germany, UK, Benelux, the Nordics and western Europe, numbers only 100,000 1 litre bottles.
The recipe for the original spiced gin liqueur was first recorded in Charles Tanqueray’s journals in 1839, during the days of the gin company’s trade in the Far East.
The botanicals and spices were originally sourced during Tanqueray’s journeys from Europe to the East Indies.
Tom Nichol, Tanqueray master distiller, said: “Since announcing the return of Tanqueray Malacca we’ve witnessed real excitement among bartenders who are keen to get their hands on this unique limited edition gin.
“I’ve been asked many times over the years for this gin to be brought back by Tanqueray and I’m pleased to now be making that happen.”
Official launch events hosted by Nichol will take place in February in New York, San Francisco and London.
