DGB has been working with WRAP (Waste Resource Action Programme) in the UK, the aim being to reduce its carbon footprint by 30%.
DGB brands include Boschendal, Bellingham, Douglas Green, Franschhoek Cellar and Tall Horse. More than 10 million bottles will be moving to light weights.
DGB managing director for UK and Ireland, Garreth Anderson, said: “We anticipate that consumers and the trade will welcome the lighter weight bottles, as consideration of the environment impact of consumption has become a mainstream issue. Any steps that a company takes to reduce its impact on the environment will be viewed positively.”
DGB says it aims to become an environmental leader in the South African wine industry. It has instigated a carbon footprint audit and it is compliant with the sustainability criteria set out by the South African wine industry integrated Production of Wine scheme. Its certified wines from the 2010 vintage will carry the new Wine and Spirit Board sustainability seal endorsing the wine from vine to bottling in terms of good environmental practice.
